Teamwork is a cornerstone of early childhood education. It is such an invaluable skill to teach our preschoolers but not always an easy concept to present. From my experience, there are many ways to help preschoolers learn what teamwork is and how it works and I’ve used teamwork games, lessons, and different activities to help promote discussion around this concept.

But if you know me, my number one go-to activity to teach ANY concept is to incorporate picture books! Picture books about teamwork offer a dynamic and engaging way to convey the essence of teamwork and help students see teamwork in action.

What is Teamwork?

Teamwork is a fundamental social skill that lays the groundwork for future success. It’s about individuals coming together, utilizing their unique strengths, to accomplish a shared objective. Easier said then done; even for us grown-ups!

Why Teach Teamwork in Preschool?

Preschool is a critical phase in a child’s development, and it’s the perfect time to introduce teamwork. Teaching teamwork at this stage fosters skills like problem-solving, empathy, and effective communication. All the skills that come out of teamwork, sets the stage for a lifetime of successful interactions and collaborative endeavors.

10 Questions to Ask When Reading Picture Books about Teamwork

When engaging with picture books about teamwork, asking the right questions can enhance comprehension and critical thinking. These guiding questions prompt children to reflect on the characters’ behaviors, interactions, and motivations, drawing out valuable lessons about working together towards a common goal.

  • How did the (character) behave? Did that help when it came to teamwork?
  • How did the (characters) work together?
  • Why did they need to work together?
  • Could the (character) have done it on their own? 
  • Was it hard for the (character) to work with others?
  • Do you sometimes find it hard to work with others?
  • Why was teamwork so important in this story?
  • How was the problem solved?
  • What would you have done in the situation? 
  • What do you think would have happened if they didn’t use teamwork?

When teaching teamwork, these books are invaluable tools for the preschool classroom. Through colorful characters and engaging narratives, they convey the essence of collaboration, cooperation, and the magic that happens when individuals come together for a common goal.
